On the night of Halloween in 1981, the Dark Lord Lord Voldemort, the most powerful Dark Wizard of all time, arrives at the village of Godric's Hollow to kill little Harry, son of Lily and James Potter, due to a Prophecy made by Sybill Trelawney according to which a child born at the end of July to parents who had defeated Voldemort three times would be destined to eliminate him. Although the Prophecy could refer to both Harry and Neville Longbottom, Voldemort believes that the greater threat comes from the former, as he is half-blood like him. Finding the Potters thanks to the betrayal of Peter Pettigrew, he kills James first and then Lily, who sacrifices herself to protect Harry: because of this act, Voldemort fails to kill the child and the killing curse backfires on him, causing him to lose all his powers and forcing him to flee. Harry is found among the ruins of the house by Sirius Black and Rubeus Hagrid: the latter takes him to his aunt Petunia, Lily's sister, and her husband Vernon Dursley by order of Albus Dumbledore, to ensure that the protection born from Lily's sacrifice remains through the blood bond with Petunia; meanwhile, in the entire magical world, Voldemort's fall is celebrated and Harry becomes famous as The Boy Who Lived. For the following ten years, his aunt, uncle, and cousin Dudley mistreat him and keep the truth about his identity and the death of his parents hidden from him, telling him that they died in a car accident.
Harry discovers he is a wizard on his eleventh birthday, when Hagrid bursts into his house to personally deliver the letter of admission to Hogwarts, a school of magic headed by Dumbledore himself. Harry thus becomes aware of the Magical World, a reality that exists and coexists with the Muggle world, that is, the world of non-magical people. On the Hogwarts Express, the train that takes students to the school, Harry meets Ron Weasley, who becomes his best friend; Hermione Granger, who becomes their friend after some initial disagreements; and also Draco Malfoy, who becomes his greatest rival. At Hogwarts, where he is sorted into Gryffindor house, he meets Professor Minerva McGonagall, teacher of Transfiguration and head of Gryffindor, Severus Snape, Potions master and head of Slytherin who immediately dislikes him, and Dumbledore himself.
During his first three years, Harry finds himself at the center of multiple dangers and adventures, managing to survive thanks to the help of his friends: in the first year, he prevents Voldemort, who is parasitically residing in Quirinus Quirrell, from obtaining the Philosopher's Stone, a powerful magical artifact that allows the preparation of an elixir that makes one immortal, which would have allowed Voldemort to regain a physical form. In the second year, the Chamber of Secrets is reopened, a room in Hogwarts created by Salazar Slytherin in which a Basilisk resides, and Harry confronts a fragment of Voldemort's soul that, through an old diary later destroyed by Harry, had managed to possess Ginny Weasley, Ron's sister, and set the monster against the Half-Blood students. In the third year, he meets Sirius Black, an old friend of his parents and his godfather and guardian, unjustly accused of betraying the Potters to Voldemort: after learning of his innocence, Harry helps him escape from the Ministry of Magic, inadvertently also allowing Peter Pettigrew, the true traitor, to flee.
