Light Yagami is a model student, bored with his lifestyle and tired of being surrounded by a society riddled with crime and corruption. His life takes a decisive turn when one day he finds a mysterious black notebook on the ground, titled "Death Note," which bears the following instruction: "The human whose name is written in this notebook will die." Initially skeptical about its authenticity, Light changes his mind when he successfully tests the notebook on two criminals and meets the real owner of the Death Note, a shinigami named Ryuk; he then decides to use this new power to kill all criminals, eradicate evil, and become the "God of the new world." However, when he begins to put his plan into action, the growing number of unexplained deaths draws the attention of Interpol agents and a famous private detective known as L.
Thanks to a mistake by Light, L quickly discovers that the serial killer, nicknamed by the public "Kira" (キラ?), resides in Kantō and can kill people from a distance. Light becomes aware of the investigation because his police officer father joins the Japanese task force opposing Kira. The young man then tries to create an ironclad alibi and manages to be accepted within the investigative team alongside L, while a war of intellect and psychology continues between the detective and Kira. During the confrontation between the two adversaries, a second Kira emerges, who is actually Misa Amane, a fairly famous Japanese idol. After a series of events that cause the Death Note to change owners several times, Light manages to manipulate Rem, the shinigami who owns the notebook used by Misa, to kill L in order to protect her. Although the police have discovered the existence of the Death Notes and the shinigami, Light, now above all suspicion, takes over the leadership of the investigative team and continues the charade of searching for Kira without any more opponents capable of opposing him.
