In Crash Bandicoot, the evil Dr. Neo Cortex, together with his right-hand man Dr. Nitrus Brio, aims to conquer the world. To do this, the two, intent on forming an unstoppable army of mutants, build the Evolvo ray, a machine capable of giving animals anthropomorphic features. In an attempt to create the general for his "Cortex Commandos," Dr. Cortex experiments on Crash, who is however considered a failure because he is "too good": he manages to escape from the castle by jumping out the window, but unfortunately his girlfriend Tawna is taken prisoner. The next morning, carried by ocean currents, Crash finds himself on a beach on N. Sanity Island dominated by the natives, and from there begins his journey to Cortex's castle, with the intent to rescue his beloved. By his side stands the spirit of the powerful shaman Aku Aku, who senses the good in Crash's soul and decides to help him, scattering boxes bearing his own emblem along the way. After crossing N. Sanity Island and defeating the native chief Papu Papu, Crash must face some of Cortex's other failed experiments, Ripper Roo and Koala Kong, and finally reaching the third island, he crosses the "Cortex Power" (the island's power plant) and defeats the scientist's bodyguard, Pinstripe Potoroo, sabotaging the generator and leaving the castle temporarily in darkness.

After facing and defeating Dr. Brio, the battle with Dr. Neo Cortex aboard his airship finally takes place, while the castle catches fire due to a malfunction in the laboratory. Repelling the scientist's plasma blasts, Crash defeats him by destroying his hoverboard and causing him to fall into the void; in the final scene, finally reunited with Tawna, he flies away aboard the airship.
