Following Thanos' snap of his fingers, Clint Barton sees his entire family disappear. Twenty-two days later, Tony Stark and Nebula are on the Guardians of the Galaxy spaceship, with oxygen and fuel running low, when they are saved by Captain Marvel, who takes them back to Earth.

The three land at the Avengers headquarters, where they reunite with Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, Bruce Banner, James Rhodes, Thor, and Rocket. Captain Marvel proposes to kill Thanos, and the other Avengers decide to help her, hoping to steal the Stones and use them to bring everyone back to life. The mission proves unsuccessful: a greatly weakened Thanos explains that he destroyed the Stones using their own power, which nearly cost him his life. Learning that what the Titan did is irreversible, Thor, enraged, beheads him.

Five years pass, during which Ant-Man has been trapped in the quantum realm but manages to escape by chance. For him, only five hours have passed, and he goes to Steve and Natasha, claiming that it would be possible to use the quantum realm to travel through time. Therefore, the three visit Tony Stark, who has retired from public life after becoming a father, proposing to look for a way to go back in time and retrieve the Stones, but he refuses to rejoin the Avengers. Then, the trio turns to Bruce Banner, who has meanwhile found a way to transform into Hulk while keeping the scientist's brain. Banner agrees to help them, although time travel is beyond his area of expertise.
