Native of Konoha, the young Minato is described by Jiraiya as a good boy, respectful, and characterized by a strong desire to become Hokage, an aspiration he would achieve, ironically, only one year before his death. He was a student of Jiraiya and was the teacher of Kakashi, Obito and Rin. He was nicknamed the Yellow Flash of the Leaf or Yellow Flash of Konoha for his technique of Instantaneous Displacement which allowed him to move from one point to another instantly. He graduated from the Academy at the age of 10, and the person he wished to fight was his own master Jiraiya.

Minato is a ninja who possesses incredible abilities, being one of the strongest characters in the entire Naruto universe. He holds the nickname Yellow Flash of the Leaf or Yellow Flash of Konoha, because his speed left yellow trails as he teleported at unimaginable speed with the technique Flight of the Lightning God, a space-time technique that allows teleportation while time stands still (time does not pass during teleportation), anywhere there is a seal. His nickname is feared in lands, villages, and distant countries, so much that during the Third Great Ninja War, all the ninjas of the Village Hidden in the Rock were warned to flee immediately if they ever encountered him. Teleportation is enabled by a seal that can be placed on any solid object and presumably also on liquids. As a quick tactic on the battlefield, Minato uses the scattering of some three-pronged kunai that are already marked.

The virtues surrounding Minato are the qualities of a quintessential ninja. His behavior in battle shows no signs of alteration; he always remains a shrewd and cunning ninja, seeking to study the situation, understand the opponent's powers, and above all surprise the enemy, a virtue that his student Kakashi learned directly from him.
