CHARACTER INFORMATION

Legolas is the son of King Thranduil, Lord of the Northern Mirkwood, descendant of the royal line of the Sindar Elves. The novel does not mention Legolas's age; the film staff calculated (randomly picking a date from the timeline created by Tolkien) that Legolas is 2931 years old and was therefore born in the 87th year of the Third Age (this date is widely accepted). He is an excellent archer and has highly developed sight and hearing.

Legolas is introduced in the events of The Lord of the Rings during the Council of Elrond. The Council must decide what to do with the recovered One Ring of Sauron, and Legolas is sent to Rivendell by his father to report the events that led to Gollum's escape from Mirkwood, where the latter was held captive.

When the Council of Elrond decides to entrust a group of wanderers with the mission to destroy Sauron's Ring, Legolas is chosen by Elrond to represent the elven people within the Fellowship of the Ring.

The company also includes the Dwarf Gimli, son of Glóin. Legolas and Gimli soon begin to bicker due to the ancient rivalry between elves and dwarves, but also because Gimli’s father was a prisoner of King Thranduil during the events narrated in The Hobbit. Despite their quarrels, the two become great friends, especially after the Fellowship's stay in Lothlórien, where Gimli bows to the beauty of Galadriel and greets her with words full of respect and kindness.

Legolas and Gimli will have the opportunity to strengthen their friendship after the Fellowship of the Ring dissolves at the Falls of Rauros: together with Aragorn, they track down the hobbits Merry and Pippin, kidnapped by Saruman’s Uruk-hai; they then share the Battle of Helm’s Deep, followed by the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and finally the last one at the Black Gate, also called the Morannon.

Following the destruction of the One Ring, Gimli and Legolas travel together for a while, visiting the forest of Fangorn. Later, Legolas obtains permission from his father to live in Ithilien to restore the splendor to this region that had suffered greatly due to its proximity to Mordor.

After Aragorn’s death, Legolas leaves Middle-earth by descending the Anduin River, and Gimli, eager to stay by his friend’s side and see Lady Galadriel once more, departs with him. Gimli is the first dwarf allowed to sail to Valinor, probably thanks to Galadriel, powerful among the Eldar, who had not forgotten him.

His departure for Aman is in Q.E. 120.
