CHARACTER INFORMATION

As the Goblins tell, the sword belonged to King Ragnuk The First, but it was taken from him by Godric Gryffindor. However, Bill Weasley explains to Harry that, according to Goblin customs, an object forged by them should return to their race once the owner has died, instead of being passed down to descendants. J.K. Rowling stated that Godric Gryffindor never stole the sword from Ragnuk The First, but that Unci Unci lied by exploiting their idea of ownership. This revelation was also included on Pottermore.

Being forged by goblins, the sword is indestructible and the blade never needs to be re-sharpened. The sword can also absorb any kind of power it comes into contact with, only to become stronger. Since Harry used it to kill the Basilisk, the sword absorbed its venom and became capable of destroying Horcruxes.

The sword has a deep connection with the Sorting Hat, another object belonging to Gryffindor, since the sword comes to the aid of any Gryffindor who needs it, appearing right from it. As Albus Dumbledore said, only a true Gryffindor is able to pull the sword from the hat.

It must be said that it was truly fortunate that Voldemort did not choose the sword to turn it into a Horcrux, since the sword is by nature indestructible, and so Voldemort could have truly become immortal, unless a way was found to destroy it.
