INFORMATION

Vergil is a character from the Devil May Cry video game series and is the twin brother of Dante, the protagonist. He appears in the first installment as Nelo Angelo, in Devil May Cry 3 as the main antagonist, and in the Special Edition of Devil May Cry 4. In the Special Edition of the 3rd and 4th installments, Vergil is a playable character.
Vergil's main characteristic is his nature opposite to Dante's: like Dante, he is half demon, but while Dante uses his abilities to serve humans, Vergil uses his powers for personal goals and his sole interest is to increase his demonic power and strength to become like his father.
The Yamato is the katana forged in darkness, Vergil's trademark, appearing in Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 3, Devil May Cry 4, and Devil May Cry 5. It is a legendary sword once wielded by his father Sparda, who originally created it along with Sparda and Rebellion when the Dark Knight divided his power into three parts, and it was called upon by him to embody a "god of death." It was later left to Vergil as a memento. While Rebellion can unify the human and demonic halves of an individual, Yamato can instead separate the two forces.
In Devil May Cry 5, the Yamato was redesigned. The tsukamaki (handle/spiral wrapping) has a pattern closer to a real katana, giving it the traditional diamond shape in negative space. There is no longer a dragon on the pommel/tsukagashira and the edge fittings along the sword do not have flowing gold line motifs on black metal similar to shakudo; rather, golden dragon-style menuki are inserted under the tsukamaki to allow the fingers to grip. The tsuba/hand guard is now gold and deep navy blue, octagonal shaped with two trapezoidal halves, each with patches featuring golden dot patterns and a grove motif with golden rings, inside which are various circles grouped in threes arranged in triangular patterns, and the golden habaki/collar also has a similar embossed pattern. The hamon (wave crest) pattern on the blade is a kawazuko chōji or carnation-shaped hamon with tadpole heads, similar to those found on blades historically made by Osafune Nagamitsu. The blade also features prominent temper lines.
The sheath is black, made of traditional lacquered wood, and features several metal ornaments at the end. In Devil May Cry 3 and Devil May Cry 4 it has a golden kurigata (absent in the manga). In Devil May Cry 5, the kurigata is black. It also has a yellow sageo, the cord used to tie the katana to the waist. In Devil May Cry 5, the sageo is blue with golden polka dot accents.
