Deadpool, the "Talkative Mercenary" used to breaking the fourth wall, he sets up an ambush for a convoy to eliminate Francis, the man who horribly disfigured him. Deadpool himself invites the viewers to learn about his personal story: two years earlier, he was Wade Wilson, a former soldier of the special forces who, after being dishonorably discharged, embarked on a career as a mercenary.

One day, after threatening a stalker on commission, Wade goes to the shady pub for hitmen that he usually frequents, run by his friend. WeaselHere, a lottery called the "dead pool" is periodically organized, in which people bet on who will be the next to die. That very evening, Wade meets a girl, Vanessa. The spark between them is immediate, so much so that it blossoms into mutual love, cohabitation, and finally Wade's marriage proposal; however, after receiving the fateful yes, the man suddenly falls ill and collapses to the ground.

Medical tests reveal that he is suffering from terminal cancer in various organs. Vanessa does not want to give up and tries to stay even closer to him, but Wade is devastated and without any hope left. At Weasel's pub, he meets a mysterious patron who introduces himself to Wade as a "recruiter." He is aware of the mercenary's past in the special forces and claims to be able not only to cure his cancer but even to grant him superhuman powers: to transform him into a superhero. Wade gives no credence to the man and bids him farewell, but after some reconsideration, he decides to try this last resort, leaving Vanessa in the middle of the night.

The medical laboratory where he is taken is run by the ruthless English doctor Francis Freeman (known by the pseudonym Ajax) and his henchwoman Angel Dust, and it turns out to be a kind of factory for... mutants in which desperate people are subjected to repeated sessions of torture and inhumane treatments to forcibly bring out the Gene X, forcing them to wear a collar and thus turning them into "super-slaves" to be sold to the highest bidder. Ajax himself is a mutant, with enhanced reflexes and the ability to feel no emotions. Following the extreme torture of a hyperbaric chamber that provides him with the minimum amount of oxygen to survive, the mutant gene awakens in Wade, granting him an extraordinary... regenerating factor healing him from cancer, but horribly disfiguring his appearance.
