The protagonist of the story, Maomao, is a 17-year-old girl who grew up in a yūkaku, a pleasure district, with her pharmacist father, frequenting the Verderame Pavilion, a mid-to-high level brothel. Since she was little, she has shown a strong interest in medicinal herbs and poisons, to the point of conducting several experiments on herself; this has given her a strong resistance to substances such as poisons and aphrodisiacs. After being kidnapped while searching for herbs, she was sold to the Inner Court of the Imperial Palace, becoming a shang-fu, that is, a servant who takes care of the garments. Later, having saved the daughter of Consort Yuye, she becomes her handmaiden and taster, and begins to carry out various herbalist activities on commission. She has a small and shapeless body, which, together with the freckles she drew on her face herself, prevented her from encountering unpleasant situations in the pleasure district. She has an allergy to soba, that is, buckwheat.
