He is the Gold Saint belonging to the Gemini constellation, later High Priest after deceitfully replacing Shin of Aries, and finally a Specter of Hades. He has a twin brother named Kanon, who succeeds him as Gold Saint during the battle with the god of the underworld.

A peculiar characteristic of the character is having two personalities, one good and peaceful and one evil, power-hungry, eager to usurp Athena and rule over the Earth; this latter personality is the main antagonist of the first part of the classic series.

Saga is initially the Gold Saint of Gemini, considered by everyone a valiant man with a peaceful and generous soul and therefore much loved by the inhabitants of the Sanctuary; however, unbeknownst to anyone, he suffered from dissociative identity disorder and also possessed an evil, ambitious, and power-thirsty side. One day, his brother Kanon proposed to him to kill Athena, the High Priest, and Aiolos of Sagittarius to dominate the Sanctuary: horrified by this offer, Saga strongly refused it, accusing his brother of betrayal and imprisoning him in the prison of Cape Sounion, at the foot of the ancient temple of Poseidon, but in doing so he awakened his evil side, which began to secretly put his conquest plan into action.

After learning of Athena's reincarnation, Saga was summoned by the High Priest, who informed him that he had chosen Aiolos and not him as his successor: Saga pretended to accept the decision only to then reach Aiolos on the Star Hill to assassinate him and assume his appearance. In the guise of the High Priest, Saga tried to kill the newborn Athena but failed due to Aiolos's intervention, who escaped carrying the baby with him: Saga then branded Aiolos a traitor, forcing him to flee (during which he met his death at the hands of Shura of Capricorn), after which he began to rule over the Sanctuary
