Sasuke is a member of the Uchiha Clan, son of Fugaku and Mikoto, and younger brother of Itachi.

From a young age, he shows great abilities, but despite this, he grows up in the shadow of his brother's unparalleled talent, who has always been the only one to recognize his skills. At first, Sasuke greatly admires Itachi but at the same time is jealous of his abilities, considered unique within the clan: when Itachi begins to distance himself from the Uchiha, Sasuke manages to gain his father's first recognitions, who teaches him the Technique of the Great Fireball.

One night, returning from the academy, Sasuke discovers the murder of his parents and the entire clan by Itachi: he tells him that he never loved him and, before fleeing from the Leaf Village, encourages him to become stronger so he can challenge him on equal terms. From that moment on, Sasuke's sole reason for living will be the desire to kill Itachi and avenge the clan, unaware of the truths that led Itachi to commit that act.

Having brilliantly completed the ninja academy and been promoted to genin, Sasuke joins Team 7, led by Kakashi Hatake, along with Naruto and Sakura. On their first mission to the Land of Waves, he immediately demonstrates his exceptional skills, holding his own against two Chunin from the Mist Village sent to kill Tazuna, the bridge builder his team was assigned to protect, and manages to fight on par with Haku by activating the Sharingan for the first time until he sacrifices himself to protect Naruto, apparently being killed.

Back in the Village, Sasuke participates with his team in the Chunin selection exams and is targeted by Orochimaru, who, eager to take possession of his body and Sharingan, brands him with the Cursed Seal. During the ensuing battles, Sasuke faces Yoroi Akado and later Gaara, but the fight with the latter is interrupted and continues unofficially; the Sand ninja is subsequently defeated by Naruto, who comes to help his companion.

After the attack on the Leaf Village, Sasuke discovers that Itachi has returned to the Village and, driven by revenge, goes to kill him. Despite his improvements, Sasuke is easily defeated and humiliated by his brother, who does not consider him strong enough to kill him because he does not hate him enough.

Humiliated by the bitter defeat in the battle he had awaited all his life and by Naruto's continuous progress, Sasuke comes to understand that he must make a precise choice to best face Itachi and increase his strength: to distance himself from all the people with whom he had formed bonds until that moment because those kinds of feelings would hinder the other feeling in his heart, namely the hatred toward his brother, risking not becoming strong enough to carry out the revenge for his clan. Later, he will confess this to Naruto during their fight at the Valley of the End, where he explains that it is because of bonds that one suffers, but Naruto, having had no family or brothers, cannot truly understand what it means to lose those bonds forever. Naruto admits he does not know what it feels like but that Sasuke is like a brother to him, being one of his first bonds, and that is why he has no intention of losing him or letting him go to Orochimaru. Sasuke tells Naruto, however, that the latter, like him, knows what it means to be alone and that this makes people strong; for this reason, if he had managed to break the bond even with him, his best friend, he would become even stronger, besides the fact that Itachi told him that to obtain his power, he would have to kill his best friend.
