Riko, a twelve-year-old girl, lives in the Belchero orphanage in the city of Orth. The city overlooks a huge chasm in the ground called the Abyss, with a diameter of 1000 meters and an unknown depth. This chasm is a source of magical relics that are collected to be resold on the surface, and it is a travel destination for many explorers from all over the world. However, only very few expert explorers, called white whistles, have returned to the surface from the lower layers, while all others have remained in the depths or have died because of the curse.

Each depth layer presents different characteristics ranging from the vegetation and fauna that inhabit it to the symptoms of ascending that become more severe the deeper one goes. One day, while Riko is exploring the first layer of the Abyss in search of relics, she is attacked by a monster, and Reg, a strange robotic boy, saves her by scaring off the monster with a relic. Riko, together with her friends, devises a plan to have Reg adopted by the Belchero orphanage as well.

Days later, Riko comes into possession of a message from the depths of the Abyss containing a call to descend into the chasm. Riko is convinced that the message was sent by her mother, Lyza, one of the five white whistles and also an explorer who has been missing for years, and she decides to set out. Reg also decides to join her to help Riko on her journey and to discover his true origins. The two children leave secretly, aided by their friends, and embark on a journey with the awareness that they can no longer return to the surface. During the journey, they will realize that the Abyss is as special as it is dangerous, especially because of the curse and the creatures living in the various layers.
