Kill la Kill is set at the Honnōji Academy, a fictional high school located near the Tokyo Bay in Japan. The school is dominated by its fearsome student council, led by Satsuki Kiryūin, and its students wear special uniforms, called Goku Uniforms, which grant them superhuman abilities thanks to the so-called war bio-fibers, the material they are made of. Ryūko Matoi, a student in possession of half of a scissor-shaped sword capable of cutting through the Goku Uniforms, transfers to the academy in search of her father's killer and, after confronting the student council, barely manages to escape. Not knowing what to do, after fleeing, Ryūko falls into a ditch where she encounters a sailor uniform named Senketsu (literally "fresh blood drinker," because the uniform needs to feed on the owner's blood to activate its power) which puts itself on her, making her so powerful that she can face both Satsuki herself and her trials and obstacles. That uniform is a Kamui, a type of outfit designed by Isshin Matoi, Ryuko's father, much stronger than any other military uniform with stars and capable of destroying them. Meanwhile, the girl befriends a schoolmate named Mako Mankanshoku, whom she had met earlier, and goes to live with her family in the slums around the Academy.
