Miku Hatsune is a Vocaloid developed by Crypton Future Media and designed as a sixteen-year-old girl. Launched on August 31, 2007, it was released exactly at midnight in Japan (4:00 PM in Italy), initially as the mascot and the first Japanese application of the VOCALOID2 program. At this stage, Miku was one of the various selectable characters to provide the voice for the Vocaloid synthesizer. Her name is the result of the combination of hatsu, ne, and Miku, which can be translated as "First voice of the future." Her voice was obtained by sampling the voice of the Japanese voice actress and singer Saki Fujita. Subsequently, Hatsune Miku became the protagonist of several original manga and the video game series Hatsune Miku: Project Diva.
