After being promoted to Genin, Naruto joins Team 7, led by Kakashi, along with Sasuke and Sakura. After seven D-ranked missions, Team 7 is given the opportunity to undertake a C-ranked mission: protecting a bridge builder, Tazuna. An attack by unknown ninjas escalates the situation, raising the mission's danger level to B.

Team 7 is forced to face the powerful ninja Zabuza Momochi, sent by Gatō to kill Tazuna. Kakashi, using the power of the Sharingan, manages to overpower Zabuza by attacking him from behind. The battle against Zabuza continues. Naruto commits himself to no longer fearing battles and is determined to prove to Sasuke that he is not a coward. After an initial moment of advantage, Kakashi is trapped by Zabuza in the Water Prison. After a brief moment of fear, Naruto and Sasuke devise a tactic to try to free their master. Kakashi escapes from Zabuza's Water Prison thanks to the combined strategy of Naruto and Sasuke, and the battle continues. Thanks to the Sharingan, Kakashi begins to copy all of Zabuza's movements, even anticipating a technique he had not yet used, cornering him and causing great agitation. At this point, a mysterious young boy appears and kills Zabuza.
